Hempstead, N.Y. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10 overtime game to Hofstra in its first Colonial Athletic Association game of the season. The Dragons (6-2, 0-1 CAA) held a two-goal lead with just over two minutes to go, but the Pride (4-4, 1-0 CAA) rallied with a pair of scores at the end of regulation. Hofstra's two goals in the extra frame were enough to give Drexel just its second loss of the season and snap the Dragons' six-game winning streak.
Drexel opened the game's scoring as Emily Hoesch took a Katie Bradley pass and beat Hofstra goalie, Maisie Osteen. Hofstra answered with three of the next four goals to give the Pride a 3-2 lead. The Dragons regained the lead thanks in large part to Kerry Kelly. The senior midfielder found Kaitlin Keegan who tied the score at 3-3 then beat Osteen just over two minutes later with a shot that gave the Dragons a 4-3 advantage. Hofstra's Casey McGrath tied the score before Jessica Bill scored the first of her team-high four goals to send Drexel to a 5-4 lead. Hofstra would end the first half strong as the Pride scored the next three goals, including a pair from K'Leigh Vanaman, to take a 7-5 lead into intermission.
The Dragons' defense would come up big in the second half as goalie Lauren LaBella made six saves as she held the Pride scoreless for over 27 minutes of the second stanza as the Dragons offense looked to regain the lead. Bill opened the second half by causing a turnover then scoring just seconds later to bring the Dragons one goal closer. Hoesch knotted the game with a goal on a Bradley assist, then gave Drexel the lead with a free-position goal with 19:06 remaining in the game. With the Dragons ahead, 8-7, both teams struggled to solve the opposing defense. Finally after over 12 minutes later, Bill netted her third goal of the game to give the Dragons its largest lead, 9-7, with 7:30 left to play. With the Dragons clinging to the lead, the Pride finally broke through with 2:07 remainin as Becky Thorn scored to cut the Drexel lead to a single goal. WIth just 43 seconds remaining, Jacquelyn Hetzel scored her first goal of the season to send the game into overtime. Both goals were assisted by Kimberly Hillier who also added a team-high four goals on the day.
In overtime, Drexel struck first with a Bill goal less than one minute into the extra period. The Dragons nearly went ahead by two goals as a free-position attempt by Hoesch sailed just high. With a 10-9 lead, Drexel was again just two minutes away from victory when Hillier came up big for Hofstra as she scored two goals in a thirty-second span then earned the draw control after her final goal that cinched the game for the Pride.
Both goalies played well as Osteen made 14 saves in the win while LaBella stopped 13 shots as she was charged with her first loss of the season. Both goalies allowed just one free-position goal on five attempts. The Pride held a 36-33 advantage in shots though the Dragons won 17 of the game's 25 draws.
For its next game, Drexel will return home to Vidas Field for a non-conference match-up with Bucknell on Tuesday, April 3 at 4:00 p.m.
